Elizabeth Austin

Graduate Student

I am Elizabeth and I was born and raised in Memphis, TN spending my time finding bugs, frogs, and playing in the mud. That translated to a Environmental Studies and Earth + Climate Science degree from Middlebury College in Vermont, where I found how to combine my love for nature with research. In my undergraduate, I primarily studied Southern Californian packrat middens (preserved rat nests), what we can learn about past plant/animal life, and how this can inform future conservation efforts.

I began my graduate career here at UT Austin in 2024 -- focusing on those same core principals, conservation paleobiology, and applying it to the study system of the Caribbean. I think it is both beautiful and informative to see the interplay of plants and animals throughout time, shedding light on where ecosystems have been and where they might be going. Outside of research, I play rugby for the Austin Valkyries Women's Rugby team, and enjoy cooking, crafting, and being outside.
