Carmen Urban
Research Technician
I grew up in the outskirts of Austin and have always been fascinated by nature (especially dinosaurs), so when I entered college, I knew I wanted to study animals. My diverse interests led me to double major in Biology and Plan II at the University of Texas at Austin. Though I wasn't studying geology (a major field for paleontologists), I spent half my college career in the Jackson School of Geosciences working with the Clarke Lab on bird evolution. I also volunteered at UT's Vertebrate Paleontology Lab, learning how to prep fossils and manage collections. After graduating in 2021, I spent a summer at Badlands National Park working in their prep lab and enjoying the beautiful nature of South Dakota. Since returning home, I've started working here at the Kemp Lab as a lab technician, segmenting and landmarking skulls in Avizo, Dragonfly, and 3D Slicer.
In my spare time, I like to play Dungeons & Dragons (and some video games), go birdwatching, draw and make other kinds of art, play my piano, and go hiking. I also enjoy being a nerd and nerding out. Science and geeky stuff is so cool!
